Dr. Cassidy: "Mary, how are you coming along with your gambling addiction?"
Mary: "Well, I think things are pretty good. I think I'm at a place where I can handle it more."
Dr. Cassidy: "Have you been to the casino recently?"
Mary: "Yes. I was there yesterday."
Mary: "Yes. I was there yesterday."
Dr. Cassidy: "I see."
Mary: "But it was only for 8 hours. Usually, I'm there for 10."
People often say they want to change but their actions don't match their speech.
Mary might tell Dr. Cassidy that she knows she has a gambling problem and wants to change. She may go to her therapist for years and say everyday how much she wants to change.
But the proof is in the pudding. If she is still going to the casino for long hours, she has no leg to stand on when she declares her desire to beat her addiction.
When someone repeatedly says they want to do one thing, but their regular behavior reflects a different motivation, psychologists asked, what is this other seemingly unconquerable motivating force? To explain this, the idea of the subconscious was developed.
However, there is a better and more complete explanation for what is driving us.
That thing is what is commonly called the soul.
What is the soul?
The soul was created by God. It is not subhuman or external to the human. The human being is first and foremost a soul. Attached to that soul, after the process of incarnation, is a spiritual body (sometimes known simply as "the spirit") and a physical body.
Unfortunately, modern science only recognizes the existence of the physical body.
Just as the physical body exists on the physical plane, the spirit and soul exist in their own universe. Attached to the soul by a golden chord is the spirit body. Attached to the spirit body by a silver chord is the physical body. Therefore these different parts of the human make up the human. However, the soul is who we really are. While the physical body and even the spirit may break away from the soul and cycle its makeup into the fabric of existence on the physical and spiritual planes, the soul, as far as we know now, is eternal.
What does the soul do?
Just as the spirit and physical bodies express themselves with movement and action, the soul expresses itself through emotion. Most conventional sciences believe emotion is local to the brain. That is, they believe emotion is created inside of the brain through chemical processes.
But this is not true. The soul makes emotions and every emotion created is unique to that soul.
The soul is also sensitive. While it can feel its own emotions and express them, it can also feel the emotions of others.
However, due to the blocks of negative emotions such as anger, fear, and intense grief, the soul is often blocked from its potentiality in experiencing its own emotions and that of others.
It must also be understood that thoughts of the mind, and words spoken, will not always adequately represent one's true emotions. The main attributes of the soul are its desires, motivations, intentions, and memories.
What is the mind?
The mind is part of the spirit body. While the mind is an important tool, it is only a means to certain limited ends. While the soul has the potential for infinite growth, the mind does not.
Also, (and this is very important) the soul and its intelligence is a greater one to that of the mind.
Let's illustrate this concept further. While the brain operates the body, the mind operates the spirit, and the heart operates the soul.
It is possible to think and say that you want something but if your soul says something different, the soul and its desires will always win out in the end.
