My Catfish Experience

The following is a record of a chat exchange where someone created a fictional online persona in order to defraud me out of some money. The practice is known as catfishing.

I remember the day I was drawn in and how much it affected my life. I had been blocking my father from being able to text, call, and email me for a few months. Somehow, his voicemails still get through and since he hadn't left a voicemail in some time, I decided to listen to one he just left. I often have dreams of my father. He is still a major influence on my life.

I remember it was Sunday and I was thinking about my father and mother, thinking that I could spend some time trying to feel all the emotions I feel toward them including the traumatic experiences from my youth. I thought I would spend a few hours doing this.

Instead, as I often do, I gravitated toward one of my addictions - in this case, looking up vegan news online. I read some articles and came to one that described an increase in traffic to a popular new vegan/vegetarian dating app called Veggly. My love life has been fairly non-existent except for my porn addiction and regular ogling of/fantasizing over women. I thought I would get on the app and see what would happen.

I felt the thrilling feeling of possibility blossom in my soul as I scrolled down across different pictures of vegans, vegetarians, and those who are aspiring to be one. Maybe I could get into a relationship with one of these people.

One of them was Stacy, a 54 year old woman pictured with her dog, who I did not find particularly attractive. But I reminded myself that I like older women and in the back of my mind I felt she would probably be easier to contact than many of the younger women on the site.

So I liked her picture and gave her the only "big like" you can give before you have to pay for more.

Then a family friend called me. An older Japanese man named Condo. I affectionately called him one of my father's spies because typically after ignoring my father for a while, he will usually persuade someone close to him to ring me up.

I felt particularly vulnerable because of my surging desire for a relationship and my guilt over not using the time to feel my emotions so I punished myself by listening to Condo drone on for a long time while I scoured the internet for more things that would amuse me.

It was during this time that Stacy got back to me and sent me a link to her Whatsapp. With a heavy sigh mixed filled with amusement, guilt, and excitement, I contacted "her."

Those interested in a good cautionary tale may want to read the following. There were a lot of signs that told me she wasn't real. And I conveniently ignored them all in the interest of having someone tell me they wanted me. At one point, I told the catfisher I would call them in 15 minutes during my lunch break at work. She promptly called me, ignoring the fact I had to wait before reaching them. When I did reach them on the phone all I heard was silence punctuated by a few unintelligible noises..

I was played well but, much like the Lila character from one of my stories, I wanted to believe the lies.

A few days after my catfishing affair, the feelings of betrayal and self-loathing sent me further into a tailspin. I decided to tap an Asian massage therapist I knew who offered her body to me for a price. I paid her $250 and experienced a night of bittersweet bliss and depravation. I didn't really enjoy the sex but I wanted closeness and attention from a woman. I have never really enjoyed sex in a deep way. It's always been like, "Well, I can get certain things out of this so let's do it." Maybe it will be different if and when I find my soulmate.

Um, yeah, so there was a woman that I knew for a while a few years ago. I was about 29 I think when I met her. She was 69 actually, so it's about 40 years difference. Um but uh, I didn't know that I was attracted until, you know, we were friends at church. We went to the Unitarian Universalist church. Um, and uh she and I were kind of acquaintances and friends and we got to know each other and then... she sat down with me when I was going through a difficult time and she invited me to her place. And she told me some of her beliefs and uh, we got closer and I felt comfortable with her and I started to feel attracted to her. And um, later we, you know, at one point I was hoping I could cuddle with her, and she let me do that but uh, she didn't want to go too far and we kissed a little bit but uh, she didn't want to go further than that. So um, I uh, I left and then the next day she said she - she wants to be my friend but she doesn't want anything beyond that. So um, I still felt attracted to her and - and we were still friends and we would still see each other but um, she told me that she wanted a relationship and I guess she thought I was looking for sex and, you know, I guess I was, to be honest. Um, I - I feel like I wanted more than that too maybe but I don't know. So that's what happened. And she ended up moving. And uh, yeah, that - that was her. Her name was June... so...

This is not the only time I was bamboozled. I once let my mother use my bank account while she was being scammed. I had to gulp a several times as I found myself not ultimately attracted to this person - at least physically. I didn't like her teeth or the way she smiled or her obsession with dogs. But the idea of someone wanting me, as I said, was what really drew me in.

I was in a hedonistic frenzy the last day of my interaction with Stacy. I threw the rules out the window and chatted with her during my shift at work, often while driving. It's a very dangerous thing to do, but I justified it because I craved the attention. I would still justify it if someone came into my life. I haven't changed.

But I didn't trust them to tell me and figured the the money would be better spent elsewhere so I never asked.

Did they enjoy entrapping me? Was it a woman doing this or a man? How could they steel themselves and lie with such confidence?
