Hey Everyone,
In this post I'd like to suggest some ideas for how we can change the workplace so we can enjoy work instead of it being a drudgery and a slog. I will also suggest changes you can make in your personal life... because it all starts with you!
Helping Real People
How do you serve someone in a way that will help them? We must remember that we are there to help real people with real lives. These people are not statistics - they are our sisters and brothers. We must always ask ourselves how best we can help our sisters and brothers and how best to help nourish, support, and love them.
Attitude is Everything
When looking for work, (which is not just "a job" but a way to engage in this dynamic world we are a part of) look for something best suited to your interests. And when you bring someone on board, look for positive qualities in their personality and their interest in the goals of the organization. As the great CEO Papa John would say, "Hire for attitude, train for aptitude."
Communicate and Hang Out More
Spending time with your co-workers and shooting the breeze should be a regular occurrence. There is downtime in every field and if there isn't, it should be created. People should feel free to communicate with each other. People should police themselves as far as how much time they ought to spend communicating and how much time engaging certain functions of a project. If people are spending all their time talking without contributing to a project at all, they are clearly not interested in the goals of the organization and should be let go. But remember that good communication will help bring about the ends desired.
Feel and Heal
Sometimes it's not your manager or your apprentice that is the asshole... it's you! If you feel stressed out, burnt out, angry, scared, or sad, you need to... get it out! It would be great if we could provide sound-proof rooms in the workplace so you can throw a fit when you need to (trust me, you'll feel better afterward). Until that happens, make a space for this in your own home.
Bring in the Natural World
We are meant to live in harmony with nature. Let's integrate our infrastructure to be harmonious with our animal friends, the waterways, and the forests. And why not let some of the more sociable animals join us inside the workplace? As we return back the earth the animals and plants won't be "wild" anymore. They will assist us with our goals.
Quality over Efficiency
In the modern workplace, the interest of efficiency is placed above the interest of the health and welfare of the worker. Happy, healthy workers who share the interests of the company will always produce preferable outcomes. Get ready to see less unfortunate accidents with a healthy, focused workforce and more happy accidents where someone thinks of a new innovation to help streamline processes.
Authenticity and Honesty
So often in the modern workplace, authenticity and honesty are sacrificed in the name of being "professional." But that's often just another term for having a heavy facade. Did you ever see one of your co-workers get quiet fast when the "boss" walks in? Why are we so afraid of offending management? If managers have a stick up their ass, they need to pull it out. Honesty and truth is always the best course of action. There's a reason why most people don't tolerate lying - it's because it hurts trust. The best way to be trustworthy is to be honest all the time. Let's be proficient, not professional.
Enjoying what you do
God put us on Earth to enjoy ourselves. If we are not looking forward to go to work, there must be problems in our attitude. Or we have lost interest in the work we are doing. Find something that makes you excited to wake up in the morning. What kind of work would make you want to come early and stay late?
The Workplace should be a Playplace
It may be hard to see it now, but work shouldn't be work at all. It should be fun, enjoyable, engaging, and exciting. If it isn't, we are not doing our best. And doing your best is not about working harder but being more creative.
Act like a Child
Ever hear someone tell you to stop acting like a child or to start acting your age? I'll tell you what to do to those people. Make a face and blow a raspberry at them - then throw a firecracker at the ground and whisper loudly, "I'm a magician!" Then disappear in a puff of smoke. HAVE SOME FUN. KICK SOME BUTT! Do a cartwheel. Stop acting like such an adult!
Do what you Want All the Time
If you haven't figured it out yet, I'll give you a hint. Find out what makes YOU happy and go for it. If you don't want to do something, don't do it. Let your heart guide you. When you find something that thrills you, you're exactly where you're supposed to be.
