Suggesting Pronouns for God

Let's come up with some easy pronouns for our Creator. First of all, as far as we know, God is not male or female but has the metaphysical qualities of masculinity and femininity. Those qualities are inherent to God. Such qualities may encompass the whole of every soul God has or will ever make.

When referring to God, AJ Miller has used the pronouns She and Her or He and Him interchangeably. I don't know all the reasons why he uses one in one instance and another in another instance. But I have heard him say that he has used the pronouns She and Her to trigger a particular audience he is giving a seminar to. I have also heard him say that he will use a feminine or masculine pronoun based on a quality of God he feels at the moment.

Regardless of when he uses what pronoun, I suggest we create pronouns that are not specific to either sex. These pronouns would be used for God only because She/He is the only one we know who encompasses all the masculine and feminine traits that exist or may exist.

I was attempting to write a constitution for a nation of people who would like to progressively adhere to God's moral standard. I found it tedious to use the traditional He/She subjective pronouns or Him/Her objective pronouns. I looked up the standard "gender-neutral" pronouns used by people who are currently thinking about gender. The most accepted ones currently are Ze and Zir.

I don't recommend these pronouns because the sound of the letter Z is a harder sound. I feel the same about the letters J and K, and also the sound of CH.

If God's personality is soft and gentle, so must pronunciations referring to God be soft.

I then looked to the Hawaiian language which uses a lot of softer sounds such as H, M, and L. In that language, He and She are both translated to "O ia" while Him and Her are both translated to "Ia ia."

The problem with those translations are in the amount of syllables used. "O ia" is 3 syllables and "Ia ia" is 4. The spelling is helpfully short but the syllables would take more time to say than he, her, she, or him.

I then decided to try to make my own simple pronouns. I looked at the English Alphabet and went down the list. Could I use another letter instead or the H in He or the SH in She?

Then I saw the letter L.

That was it.

L has a very soft pronunciation. It would be perfect, in my opinion, to use when creating pronouns for God. L is not associated with any particular gender the way F or P sounds are used in many languages for father or the M is used in many languages for mother. I myself, have coined the term "Loma" in reference to my Heavenly Parent.

So "L" is the letter I would use. I would then use the last letter of the word He and She to create the word "Le." Le is not a word in the English Language although it is sometimes used as an abbreviation or suffix. It is a word that is the masculine form of "the" in French but that is an entirely different language in the family of Romantic Languages while English is a Germanic Language. Also, the pronunciation of Le would rhyme with He and She which is not the same as the French.

So Le would be my suggestion as the most basic pronoun for a Being with Masculine and Feminine characteristics.

Now Le, like He and She is a Subjective Pronoun. What about Objective Pronouns like Him and Her? We could go with Lim or Ler. I would suggest Ler because it is a simple addition of the letter R. R is also a softer consonant. The M in Him or a possible Lim is rather soft too but there is another reason to use Ler.

We also have to find a Possessive Pronoun. We have Hers and His. This is where it gets interesting.

There are, admittedly, a few different directions we can go here. First off, we have the S Letter at the end of both Hers and His. But whereas S is added to Her to make Hers, S substitutes the M in the case of Him to make His. Someone didn't like how Hims sounded I guess.

And unfortunately, we have the Z sound coming up again. Because you don't pronounce the S sound when indicating possession in the English language. In the case of His, Hers, or John's, or Susan's, it's all a Z sound. Interestingly, in the case of an animal or thing, it is often an S sound. Some examples would be "a horse's ear" or "a guitar's string."

For now, it would be consistent to keep the S-that-sounds-like-a-Z.

So if Ler and Lim both sound ok, why do I prefer Ler? It really could go either way. Adding an R to Le and getting Ler is a simpler and more logical change than turning the E in Le to an I and adding an M to get Lim.

Is this all getting too confusing? It may be a good idea to take a break, breathe from your diaphragm, and maybe look at an animal.

Ultimately, we could go either way:

If He => Him => His makes more sense, then we could use Le => Lim => Lis

If She => Her => Hers makes more sense, then we could use Le => Ler => Lers

The Lis that follows Le and Lim is economical to use because Lis is 3 letters while Lers is 4.

But I like how the R rolls out the mouth. And I feel like it makes more logical sense to add 1 more letter each time to describe the different kinds of pronouns we're using.

So for now, I would go with Le, Ler, and Lers as God's Subjective, Objective, and Possessive Pronouns respectively.

But hey. That's just how I feel right now on a rainy Friday in October in Colorado. Maybe I'll feel differently tomorrow.

And Language has a mind of its own. Or I should say people have a mind of their own when they create and use language. 

You can make your own suggestions. I hope we end up with a word that easily describes God in the English, and after that, who knows? Maybe one day we'll stop using languages the way we do. Maybe we'll all become able to read each other's hearts and use our mouth to sing our feelings. It will be exciting to see what changes we make as we grow in love
